Screencap Zine

I am the designer for the zine Screencap. I was responsible for creating the the look of the zine, from the cover to the small easter eggs included within. I wanted Screencap to be fun and educational, drawing in both hardcore fans and people who are simply intruiged by the cover or contents.

Our goal was to create something that could fit in with more high end, professional publications, but still felt very approachable. To achieve this, we opted to incorporate cute color palettes and shapes.

Screencap's primary mission is accessibility, so the cover is designed to give a casual looker as much information as possible about the contents. The stickers are fun and consistent across each issues, eventually allowing consistent readers to understand what each issue contains at a glance. They denote the critical theory topics discussed within, as well as the genres of the media being discussed.

I very much wanted Screencap to feel like it was "by fans for fans", so I take a lot of care to add in elements that I personally would get very excited about seeing if I was a reader. Every issues contains informational pages, as well as a simple easter egg flipbook animation on the bottom corner of the odd pages.

As Screencap's goal is accessibility, it was important to make sure that readers felt like they could understand the text as much as possible without having to look up words. Along with working with my co-creator, Isabel Yehya, to ensure we used more colloquial language and phrasing, we also decided to create a glossary. Any words or ideas that we think could use further explanation is highlighted and included in our Glossary section at the end of each copy.
